Amenities

  • Cash (Canadian currency only), debit, and credit are accepted for admissions, gift shop, and facility bookings. There is no cash machine onsite.
  • Public washrooms are available inside the Visitor Centre. During closed hours, outhouses are open from May through October.
  • A day-use area operated by Alberta Parks is located near the Visitor Centre with 2 cook shelters (one with power), several fire pits (wood provided), picnic tables, and playground.
  • The nearest dining can be found at Dunvegan Gardens (2km east), in Fairview (26 kilometres north) and Rycroft (23 kilometres south).
  • Free tourist information brochures and magazines are available. This is not an official Tourism Visitor Information Centre, but staff are happy to answer questions to the best of their ability.

Guided Tours

The historic buildings are kept locked for security reasons and are only accessible by taking a guided tour with Historic Dunvegan staff. The grounds are accessible at all times and visitors are welcome to enjoy the scenery and explore interpretive panels when the Visitor Centre is closed and/or guided tours are not available.

  • Guided tours are available for drop-in visitors or by pre-booking.
  • Guided tours take approximately an hour and a half.
  • All guided tours are dependent on staff availability. In May and June tours are not available between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays. Other times may be restricted for various reasons.
  • To ensure tour availability, especially for groups of 10 or more, please contact us at least one day in advance.

Depending on staff availability, tours usually occur every hour on the hour. Every effort is made to accommodate individual visitor needs and interests. The last tour of the day usually leaves the Visitor Centre at 4 p.m. To confirm daily tour schedules, please call the Visitor Centre.

Pamphlets for self-guided walking tours are available as part of the admission fee. Access inside the historic buildings is not available on a self-guided tour.

School Visits

  • Free parking is available for both school buses and parent volunteers.
  • Payment may be made by cheque, cash, debit, or credit. It is preferred that payment be received on the day of the program. Debit or credit payment must be made in person. Invoices can be issued by request.
  • There are no food services at Historic Dunvegan. Students and supervisors must bring their own lunch. Picnic tables, fire pits, and picnic shelters are available in the day-use area.
  • Proper attire is required: Shoes or rubber boots (no flip-flops), a hat, a sweater or jacket, pants or shorts (no skirts or dresses).
  • Students should have sunscreen, insect repellent, a snack, water bottle, and name tag.

Accessibility

  • An accessible washroom that includes a change table is available when the Visitor Centre is open.
  • Historic buildings are not wheelchair accessible. All 4 historic building entrances have a staircase consisting of 2 to 4 steps.
  • Walking paths may be difficult for wheelchairs. The surfaces are concrete, gravel, and grass and are uneven in several areas.
  • Benches are situated along the walking paths between the historic buildings.
  • Service animals with identification are permitted in the Visitor Centre and historic buildings.
  • A wheelchair is available at the Visitor Centre for public use.

Accommodation

  • A campground, operated by Alberta Parks, is located next to the historic site. All sites must be reserved in advance by calling 1-877-537-2757 or visiting www.reserve.albertaparks.ca.
  • Other accommodation is available in Fairview (26 kilometres north) and Rycroft (23 kilometres south).

Gift Shop

  • The gift shop is open the Victorian Day long weekend to Labour Day, Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • A variety of items are available including coffee, ice, cold drinks, snacks, toys, games, books, crafts, jewelery, clothing, candy, and postcards.
  • Cash (Canadian currency only), credit, and debit are accepted.

Pets

  • Pets are permitted on the general grounds. Except for identified service animals, pets are not permitted in the Visitor Centre or historic buildings.
  • Pets must be on a leash at all times and cleaned up after.
  • Do not leave pets in vehicles.

Visitor Tips

  • Call ahead to ensure an interpreter will be available to provide a tour. There are certain times tours are not available.
  • Good walking shoes and clothing for variable weather are recommended.
  • To check weather, visit the Weather Network's website or call the Visitor Centre.
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended.
  • Alcohol is not allowed anywhere except in registered campsites.
  • Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is not allowed in the Visitor Centre or historic buildings.
  • There is no cell phone or internet service at Dunvegan.
  • Tours and services are in English.
  • Never approach, touch, or bother animals and birds found at Historic Dunvegan or within the Provincial Park. Report any sightings of injured or potentially dangerous animals to staff.
  • Climbing trees, fences, rocks, or monuments is not allowed.

Parking

Free public parking, with enough space for RVs (recreational vehicles) and buses is available.
